The scarlet macaw averages about 33 to 37 inches in length with a wingspan of 44-47 inches. Their weight ranges from 950 -1150 grams.
They are considered one of the most beautiful of all the macaw species. Their primary color is a bright orange red. Wings show a yellow band and a navy blue below the yellow band. Their tails are a brilliant red. often tipped with blue or violet. The rump and vent area is a powder blue. The facial skin patch is white, the iris is pale yellow and the feet are dark gray. The eye color on an adult has a golden yellow outer ring with a green inner ring that becomes paler as the bird matures.

In the wild, the scarlet can be found in Costa Rica, the Amazon Basin and the Guianas. Their range in the wild has been greatly diminished, but populations in recent years show an increase in the wild due to conservation efforts.

By nature, the scarlet is inquisitive and independent. They are good talkers and will pick up words and short phrases easily. Like other macaw species, they are highly intelligent and learn with lightening speed. They require consistent and well-defined boundaries and owners committed to providing the nurturing and stimulation that they need. With proper socialization when young and plenty of exercise, the scarlet makes an excellent companion.
